Global warming 'will kill billions'
BILLIONS face death from hunger, drought, disease and natural disasters, the world’s climate change experts warned yesterday.
Years of rising sea levels will also destroy coastal cities like New York and Tokyo.
And a third of the planet’s animals and plants could be wiped out. The doomsday scenario is the bleakest yet from scientists, who blamed man-made greenhouse gases.
The shock report from the influential United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — the leading world authority on the subject — said up to 3.2billion people will face water shortages within 80 years. A further 600million could be left starving. Millions more will die in heatwaves, wildfires, droughts and storms triggered by global warming.

The IPCC report, using research by 2,500 scientists in 130 countries, was approved unanimously by governments meeting in Brussels.
IPCC chairman Rajendra Pachauri urged the world to “pay attention” to the findings, saying: “It is a global responsibility.”
Greenpeace called it “a glimpse into an apocalyptic future.” Friends of the Earth dubbed it “a looming humanitarian catastrophe”.
Next month the IPCC, which says scientists are 90 per cent sure humans are to blame, will report how to beat it.

"Tots filmed and forced to fight"
THESE are the four vicious women who made two toddlers SLAP, PUNCH and KICK each other — and FILMED it for fun.
MUM Zara Care, 21, was named and shamed yesterday over a court case which horrified the nation.
She had ignored the screams of her son, two, as she forced him to attack his three-year-old sister.
Also named were the kids’ GRAN
Carole Olver and AUNTS Sarenza and Danielle Olver — who laughed as Care videoed the ordeal.
Carole Olver, 49, even tried to defend the horrifying footage, telling cops: “I couldn’t see any harm in toughening them up. I done the same with my kids.”
All four were convicted at a previous hearing. Yesterday at Plymouth Crown Court, Judge Francis Gilbert QC lifted an order granting them anonymity — and told them: “I find it shocking to watch.
“You caused the children to hurt each other for your own pleasure.”
Yet to the fury and astonishment of child-care specialists, he then let them off with suspended 12-month jail sentences and 100 hours community work each.
Now the children have been taken from their mum — and Judge Gilbert revealed Care will NEVER get them back.
The chilling eight-minute film is shot in a house in Plymouth, Devon, with six adults leering on.
One woman is heard saying to the two toddlers: “Do you want to play?” She pushes the boy towards the girl. They start slapping each other, goaded by the women, who are seen and heard laughing.
The boy, wearing just a nappy and a T-shirt, is floored by a blow from his sister and lies crying.
He clambers on to an armchair and buries his head under a cushion — but a woman tells him: “Get up. Don’t be a wimp all your life.”
He gets to his feet and punches his sister in the mouth and, as she falls to the ground, he is encouraged to kick her. A female says: “Whilst she’s down, boot her.”
The lad tries to leave the room but an older child blocks his path and the girl punches his back.
The boy is told: “Get up and punch her, you bloody faggot.” He chokes: “No, I don’t want to”.
But he grabs a large hairbrush and hits the girl in the mouth. She screams and appeals for help — but is turned away.
An older child in the room is heard asking: “Is it our turn yet?” The film ends with both tots screaming and an adult saying: “Oh, it’s injury time.”
The footage came to light only when the toddler’s natural dad — a soldier serving in Iraq — borrowed the camcorder. The court heard the images “reduced him to tears”.
The children are now being cared for by the father’s parents.
Care, Carole Olver, Sarenza Olver, 29, and Danielle Olver, 19, had pleaded guilty to inciting the children’s ill-treatment. Care admitted causing unnecessary suffering.
Campaigners said yesterday the women should have been jailed.
Dan Norris, Labour MP for Wansdyke and a former child protection officer, said: “The sentences are shocking — this needed to send a much more powerful signal.”
Michele Elliott of children’s charity KIDSCAPE said: “Parents will be appalled at these weak punishments. The kind of violence these people were instilling in these toddlers — it was like training pit bulls to fight each other.”
Wes Cuell of the NSPCC said: “Such cruel behaviour can seriously harm the emotional and psychological development of a child.”
And Emma-Jane Cross of BEATBULLYING said: “How can we as a society prevent bullying when role models behave like this?”
Mairead MacNeil, Plymouth City Council’s assistant director for child care, said: “The swift actions of all the agencies ensured that the children were made safe immediately.”
